Cultrex Basement Membrane Extracts for 2-D and 3-D Cell Culture

Cultrex Basement Membrane Extracts are solubilized extracellular matrices purified from Englebreth-Holm-Swarm (EHS) tumor. They polymerize at 37 C to form reconstituted basement membranes that are rich in extracellular matrix proteins, such as laminin, collagen IV, entactin, and heparan sulfate proteoglycans. These specialized sheets of extracellular matrix provide structural support for cells and play an important role in establishing tissue organization by influencing cell adhesion, proliferation, migration, and differentiation. Basement membranes are used to promote and maintain a differentiated phenotype in endothelial cells, epithelial cells, smooth muscle cells, glandular cells, and neurons, and are also used for angiogenesis assays, cell invasion assays, neurite outgrowth assays, and in vivo tumorigenicity assays. Multiple different formats of Cultrex Basement Membrane Extract (BME) are available that have been qualified for specific 2-D and 3-D cell culture applications. The features of each of the different types of basement membrane extract are detailed below. Most are available with or without reduced growth factor content and with or without phenol red.

Cultrex Extracellular Matrix Proteins

In addition to our selection of Cultrex Basement Membrane Extracts, we also offer a wide range of extracellular matrix proteins, including Collagen I, Collagen IV, Fibronectin, Laminin I, and Vitronectin. These proteins are the major structural components of the extracellular matrix and facilitate cellular communication through their interactions with integrins located on the surface of the cells. These interactions support tissue architecture and regulate processes such as cell attachment, growth, differentiation, and migration, which are important during embryogenesis, wound healing, and tumorigenesis.
