Background: Prohibitin 2
Prohibitin 2 (PHB2; also B-cell receptor-associated protein BAP37 and REA) is a 37 kDa, ubiquitous member of the prohibitin family of molecules. PHB2 is found in multiple intracellular compartments. It is suggested to be a component of an inner mitochondrial membrane complex and a nuclear repressor of the estrogen receptor (ER). Human PHB2 is 299 amino acids (aa) in length. It contains a mitochondrial localization signal (aa 1‑50), two ER repressor domains (aa 19‑49 and aa 150‑174), and a central coiled-coil domain (aa 190‑238). There may be one splice variant that shows a premature truncation after aa 289. Over aa 89‑299, mouse and rat PHB2 are 100% identical to human PHB2.
