Background: Activin RIIB
Members of the TGF-beta superfamily exert their biological effects by binding to heteromeric complexes of a type I and a type II serine-threonine kinase receptor, both of which are essential for signal transduction. Activin receptor type IIB is a type II receptor that mediates multiple signals for transforming growth factor‑beta (TGF‑beta) family members, including Activin, Nodal, Bmp7, Gdf1, Gdf3, Myostatin (Gdf8), and Gdf11. Through alternative mRNA splicing, multiple ActR-IIB isoforms can also be generated. Human, mouse and rat activin RIIB share greater than 98% amino acid sequence homology.
