Background: BPDE
Benzo[a]pyrene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon found in cigarette smoke, heavily polluted air, and smoked foods. A diol epoxide derivative of benzo[a]pyrene, 7b, 8a-dihydroxy-9a,10a-epoxy-7,8,9,10-tetrahydrobenzo[a]pyrene (BPDE-I) has been implicated as a key benzo[a]pyrene metabolite involved in covalent modification of DNA.
