Background: ORF73 HHV8
Lana1 (also known as ORF73 or HHV8) is a multifunctional protein that plays a role in the replication and long-term persistence of the viral episomal genome in dividing cells. Lana1 has been found to be associated with three different diseases observed in AIDS patients; kaposi's sarcoma, primary effusion lymphoma (which is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma affecting the body cavities) and multicentric Castleman's disease. To date there is much evidence to support a direct role for Lana1 in kaposi's sarcoma.
