Transforming Critical Care Research with Simple Western Technology
"With the Jess, we've been able to expand the scope of research significantly. This opens up whole new avenues and possibilities for biomarker discovery and therapeutic signalling."
- Dr. Sanooj Soni, Clinical Associate Professor in Critical and Perioperative Care, Imperial College London and Honorary Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthetics, Hammersmith Hospital London
Dr. Sanooj Soni, Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London, is dedicated to improving patient outcomes through both clinical practice and translational research. His work centers on understanding how extracellular vesicles (EVs) influence inflammatory signaling, particularly in perioperative inflammation and lung injury among intensive care patients.
Unlocking Insights into Inflammation and Lung Injury
One of the major focuses of Dr. Soni’s research is investigating how mechanical ventilation-induced alveolar stretch and systemic stresses from surgery trigger the release of leukocyte-derived EVs. These molecular messengers could predispose patients to lung complications, including acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
To study these effects, his team uses a variety of patient samples, human in vitro models, and mouse in vivo and in vitro systems.
However, studying EVs is challenging—these tiny particles exist in minuscule quantities, requiring highly sensitive analysis methods. Additionally, comparing protein abundance across different patient samples is critical for understanding disease mechanisms. Traditional Western blotting methods lacked the sensitivity and reproducibility needed to achieve these goals.
Overcoming Research Barriers with Jess
Jess has transformed Dr. Soni’s research by providing the high sensitivity necessary to detect and quantify EV-associated proteins, such as matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), interleukins, and calcium-binding proteins. This capability allows his team to compare protein levels across different patient conditions, helping them identify potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets.
"With the Jess, we've been able to expand the scope of research significantly. This opens up whole new avenues and possibilities for biomarker discovery and therapeutic signaling."
By automating analysis and ensuring data consistency, Jess allows researchers to maximize their use of precious clinical samples while reducing the likelihood of human error. The instrument’s efficiency also accelerates training for students and enhances the pace of experimental workflows, leading to faster discoveries.
