Tau protein serves as a bridge from microtubules to the plasma membrane to facilitate formation and stabilization of the microtubule network. Tau in PNS neurons is 758 amino acids (aa) in length and 110 kDa in size, but multiple isoforms exist, ranging from 316 to 776 aa in length. Various deletions occur within the first 500 aa, with some isoforms also showing an absence of the second Tau repeat.
