Background: DMPK

DMPK (dystrophia myotonica protein kinase), also called DMK, MDPK or MT-PK (myotonin protein kinase) is an 80 kDa cytoplasmic protein of the ser/thr kinase superfamily (EC 2.7.11.1). The 639 amino acid (aa) human DMPK includes a protein kinase domain (aa 81-349), an AGC kinase C-terminal domain (aa 350-425) and a coiled-coil negative regulatory domain that mediates dimerization (aa 467-546). Within the region used as an immunogen, human DMPK shares 72% and 73% aa sequence identity with mouse and rat DMPK, respectively. This region is included within 12 isoforms that range in size from 530-634 aa. The most prominent, muscle-specific isoform phosphorylates phospholamban and is critical for cardiac contractility.
