Background: CRX
CRX (Cone Rod homeoboX protein) is a 37-39 kDa member of the Otx family of paired-like homeodomain containing proteins. It is expressed in pinealocytes, cones, rods and rod bipolar cells, and promotes the transcription of photoreceptor cell proteins such as rhodopsin, IRBP and beta-phosphodiesterase. Although CRX may act alone, it typically binds noncovalently to both QRX and NRL, forming a transcriptional complex. Human CRX is 299 amino acids (aa) in length. It contains one DNA‑binding homeobox domain (aa 39-98). There is one isoform variant that shows a deletion of aa 146-149. Over aa 166-299, human CRX shares 97% aa identity with mouse CRX.
