Background: NT-4
NT-4 was originally identified as a mammalian homolog of the Xenopus neurotrophin, NT-4. Along with NGF, BDNF, and NT-3, it is a member of the NGF family of neurotrophic factors that are required for the differentiation and survival of specific neuronal subpopulations in both the central and the peripheral nervous systems. NT-4 functions through interactions with the TrkB receptor tyrosine kinase. Because mammalian NT-4 is much more divergent from its amphibian functional counterpart (Xenopus NT-4) than other family members, it is sometimes designated NT-5 or NT-4/5.
