Background: Phenytoin

Phenytoin is a hydantoin derivative (5,5-difenylhydantoine, 5,5′-diphenylimidazolidine-2,4-dione) which has been first synthesized more than hundred years ago and later it was found to be an anti-seizure drug by inhibiting the motor area of the cerebral cortex via blocking voltage-gated sodium channels. Phenytoin can also inhibit T-type calcium channels reducing calcium influx. Phenytoin has antiepileptic effects by increasing the levels of the serotonin (5-HT) and GABA neurotransmitters in the brain. It can also produce anti-neuralgia and antiarrhythmic heart effects. The adverse effects of phenytoin include oxidative stress, inflammation, and depression.
