Background: Tryptase alpha/beta 1

Principal Names: Tryptase alpha/beta 1 Official Gene Symbol: TPSAB1 Gene ID: 7177 (Human) Gene Map Locus: 16p13.3 (Human). Human tryptases are divided into two groups, alpha and beta. beta-Tryptase appears to be the major type stored in mast cell secretory granules and alpha-tryptase is the major isoform expressed by basophils.beta-tryptase, a major constituent of mast cell secretory granules, has emerged recently as the most specific marker in vivo of mast cell activation in humans. It is a trypsin like serine protease that hydrolyzes peptide bonds on the C-terminal side of basic amino acids. Unlike trypsin, however, it is highly selective in hydrolyzing its peptide and protein targets and resists inactivation by circulating inhibitors. It has potential roles in the lung, skin, and other tissues as a local anticoagulant, activator of collagenase, promoter of smooth muscle contraction, and modulator of neuropeptide activity. The pathogenic role for tryptases has been observed in asthmatic airway inflammation other inflammatory disorders. The gene is mapped on human chromosome 16p13.3.
