Background: 5-HT6

5-HT6 is a seven transmembrane G-protein coupled 1 receptor for serotonin, with 93% homology between human and rat, and with highest expression in neurons of the striatum, cortex and hippocampus. Expression in cultured primary astrocytes from rats and glia has also been demonstrated for most brain regions. Expression in lymph node, spleen and testis has also been observed. High affinity for psychotropic drugs including tricyclic antidepressants and antipsychotics and high expression in the limbic regions suggest a role for 5-HT6 in emotional behaviors and mental illness. Lower expression of 5-HT6 in cortical layers I-V have been observe in Alzheimer's Disease brains.
